Seriously, I've opened doors for people and have been given a weird looks as if I was standing there naked or something. Thanking someone isn't usually difficult, and the term is available in many languages. Even a polite smile works.

Agreed! Luckily at my university, we always hold the door for the next person as a sort of courtesy because we know how much it sucks to have it slam in your face. Most of the time we say thanks or smile, but the fact that we all do it for each other means the most.
